Justin Timberlake Launches 901 Tequila

Justin Timberlake could take a poop in a piece of tinfoil, roll it up, attach a couple of fish hooks to it, then sell it for $10,000 as earrings.  That JT, he's so hot right now. He's now going to use his hotness to pimp tequila which is, if you think about it, the perfect pairing.  The tequila is sourced out of Jalisco, Mexico and is expecting to launch in LA, Las Vegas, St. Louis (???), and New York sometime this spring. Why 901? A spokesperson for Timberlake explains that "901 is that time of night when your evening is ending, but your night is just beginning."  I don't think that's really the case, because 9:01 is about the time American Idol comes on.  901 is also the area code of JT's hometown of Memphis.  The link to the site must be a placeholder and is currently being used by the same people who are going to make the 901 Tequila.   But, for now, you get a big phallic bottle of tequila in its stead. 901 Tequila - US$40

Agavero Tequila Gets You Sex

Talk to any girl about tequila and 9 times out of 10 you'll hear "I can't do that stuff.  I do crazy things on that stuff."  Talk to a guy about tequila and 9 times out of 10 you'll hear, "Yeah, I like doing tequila with girls, they go nuts on it." As if tequila wasn't already the cause of thousands of surprise pregnancies, Agavero Tequila is taking it to the next level and introducing a tequila that really pumps up the passion.  They make the tequila as one normally makes tequila then hand-blend the Damiana flower in to the stuff. The Damiana flower is well known (at least in PR circles that write press releases) to be one that induces passion and love in a person.  Got someone who won't touch tequila?  Well Agavero is glad to help you get them horny as hell by providing a recipe for the Agavero Mango Chutney,  a nice topping to their brown butter seared scallops.  Oh, you're so smooth.  Agavero Tequila - US$30

How to speak Tequila

Tequila Herradura sent me this e-mail and I thought I'd share it. I used to think that "speaking tequila" meant "Oh my God, I can't do another one. No really, I get really messed up on tequila, it makes me do crazy things. I can't. Well, ok, one more." I edited out some of the marketing speak: 1. Speak to its origins 2. Choose wisely If you think all tequilas are the same , you’re wrong. When ordering tequila at a bar, keep the following in mind: -           Stick to 100 percent blue agave tequila . Mexican law only requires that at least 51 percent of the sugars in tequila come from agave; so, many brands will complete their batch with other starches, diluting the authentic flavor of the drink. -           Silver or Añejo? Depending on how long the tequila rests in wood barrels, it will develop a flavor and aroma profile that will evoke a unique sensorial experience. Ideal for marga...

Tabasco Tequila

As every flavor vodka that can be imagined has come out (though I'm looking forward, with great anticipation, to vodka flavored vodka) it's time to shift our attentions to flavored tequilas. Tabasco fires the latest salvo in the flavored tequila war with their spicy tequila that gives you the tasty jalapeno flavor of Tabasco with the drunken antics that require you to register as a sex offender that only tequila can offer. At US$21.99 this bit of tequila isn't going to break the bank but it's only available in 5 markets.  They won't tell me which 5 markets, so just go out there and start asking for it and see if that works .  Edit: The markets are Dallas, Houston, Georgia, Indiana, and North Carolina. 5150 Pure Mexican Tequila...from California

It seems that the rest of the world is doing a great job at what America used to do well.  Like manufacturing, free market economies, and the ability to discern between real entertainment and a bulemic pie eating contest. Well, I say we take those jobs back that we lost to NAFTA!  Let's do something that some other country does better!  How about electronics!?  How about automobiles!?  How about Tequila?? I like your thinkin'. Tequila 5150 comes straight to you from Hollister, CA.  No, not the clothing stores that smell like "Teen Spirit" and think that you're fat, but a town just outside of Gilroy, CA .  The owner of a popular winery in the area has planted 10 acres of Agave, the plant used for tequila.  Okay, everyone probably already knows that it's the plant used for tequila. I'm sure lawsuits are on their way as, like Scotch or Champagne, only tequila made in the state of Jalisco in Mexico can actually be called "tequila" according to a 2006...

Cinco de Mayo Required Post

I'm all for another reason to drink and party, but Cinco de Mayo seems a bit off to me. It's not a big deal in Mexico and it's akin to U.S. Americans [sic] celebrating something like the Louisiana Purchase or The Battle of Bunker Hill. However, margaritas are not lost on me and I expect to imbibe a few in the name of good Mexican-American relations. Fine Living sent me a nice little link to how-to's for the Pomegranate and Lavender Margarita's, plus a few other tequila drinks to keep things flowing. Enjoy! Margarita Recipes at Fine Living

p.i.n.k. wants to own your entire bar

p.i.n.k. spirits is concerned about two things and two things only: 1) You're not getting enough pink in your drinks and 2) you've been falling asleep waaaay too early. Though #1 is debatable #2 was verified by your significant other when they told me that you fell asleep shortly after the first showing of "Golden Girls" on Lifetime at 7:30. p.i.n.k. thought "Let's make an entire line of quality drinks and stuff some caffeine and guarana in them, because no one should have Rue Mclanahan as their final image before falling asleep." They put some action in their words and launched a bunch of stuff, including a tequila, rum, white whiskey, sake, and gin. Everything is made in Holland except for the Sake which is made in Japan and the tequila which is made in Mexico because that's where "the man" says you have to make tequila. If there are two things I can't stand it's people who are intolerant of other's people cultures, and The...

MuchoTE Tequila Launches

Tequila's a funny thing. It's gaining vodka-like popularity which means that the gimmicks to get you to drink it are becoming even more gimmicky. It's starting to remind me of razor blades. When you buy a good tequila, you don't want to go on its diamond charms glued to the bottom of the bottle or hand-blown bottles or the fact that they tell you it cures SARS. What you want is a good tequila that's sippable, drinkable, and maybe tastes good with an oyster (Okay, that could just be me). Dave and Will of MuchoTE tequila used to work for the big tequila vendors and realized that there was something missing in the market. MuchoTE is giving you exactly what you want. They're launching their reposado tequila over the next few weeks with the promise that you can get a great reposado for under US$30. They want you to buy their tequila, not their bottle. Right now, the stuff is available in Colorado with Arizona, California, Georgia, New Mexico, and Tennessee comi...

Tequila boom means tequila bars

One of the age-old questions is almost always "What wine goes with Mexican food?" The answer is always complicated but without much cause, the Good People of Mexico have already solved the problem for us. Not only are Mexican restaurants starting to stock hundreds of tequilas but tequila bars are popping up all over that allow you to sample hundreds of tequilas. The tequilas are much like wine and always have a story about their production and their taste ranges from burn-your-throat to sipping-smooth. When you walk in to a bar and it has 96 blanco tequilas, 130 reposados, 121 añejos, some snacks to help you not fall over, then you know you've found the right tequila place. Tequila has changed significantly since the time you made that "Girls Gone Wild" video on Spring Break in Cancun (Wow, did your kids feel awkward). The good stuff has no burn, is great for sipping (shooting is ridiculous), and costs enough that you'll be glad that The Fed lowered inter...

Tequila marketed to women

Usually when I talk to just about any girl about tequila, they get a small smile across their lips and a distant look in their eye. This is almost always followed by a stern look and the words "No. Never again." Inocente tequila is betting that there are plenty of girls who want to get that feeling back or, at the very least, discover that there might be a tequila they can drink that won't incite their gag reflex. The bottle looks like a vase so the girls can use it for flowers or to smash across someone's two-timing, backstabbing, head. I will survive. Ads should start popping up soon outside of stores like Dolce & Gabbana

Ethanol popularity means less tequila

High gas prices were annoying but didn't bother me much until I learned about this. High gas prices means that more people are interested in alternative fuels (this is good), that means ethanol is starting to take off (also good) which, in turn, means that corn is in much higher demand (okay), which means that farmer's are burning their agave crops in order to plant corn instead. This is very, very bad. Tequila's popularity created a gold rush of sorts with the agave plant, which takes about 8 years before it can be harvested. There was so much agave planted that it drove down prices to rock-bottom levels, which also made it very easy for smaller players to enter the tequila market. Now that ethanol is popular, it's driving corn prices up and making it more profitable to burn the agave. No good will come of this. Mark my words. NO GOOD! Ethanol boom may fuel shortage of tequila

Saturday Night Fever: Fina Estampa Tequila

I've had these bottles of Fina Estampa tequila sitting around for quite a while and just haven't attacked them for the simple reason that I need to be in just the right mood to even sip tequila. A couple of weeks ago I cracked open the bottle of Fina Estampa Anejo and tonight I poured myself a glass of their Reposado. I tend to prefer Reposado's for the most part as they haven't aged as long and don't have as much of the strong flavors that most Anejo's have. However, Fina Estampa's Anejo was easily a velvety feel and as smooth and tasty as any tequila I've tasted and the Reposado came across with a great caramel taste. Excuse me, are you the singing bush? The Anejo was nice and dark-yellow and looked thick when it was swirled around. The tequila smell was strong but the taste came across a lot lighter with a smokey feel that lasted for quite a while. It was gentle and warm as I swallowed it. Completely satisfying and made me feel like I was in a per...

The Tequila Story

Wine X Magazine has published an article that shows the story of tequila. It covers the Agave, from which Tequila is made, and the how it's different from Mezcal, one of the incorrect names of tequila. All mezcal is tequila, but not all tequila is mezcal. Got it? It also gives a nice little story about how the stuff is made and why it's not a hallucinogen, people seemed to confuse mezcal with mescaline. Trust me, big difference. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor
